Creede is surrounded by wild country. The Rio Grande National Forest covers most of Mineral County, and two wilderness areas, the La Garita to the north and east and the Weminuche to the south and west, start a short drive from town. Here are some of the best ways to explore them on foot.

Both are serious mountain days above the treeline. Get current route information from the Forest Service and a good map before you go.
The high trails are usually free of snow from July to September. June can still bring deep snowdrifts, and the first autumn snows can arrive in September. Late September, when the aspens turn, is a lovely time for lower trails.
